'It's a Wonderful Life' is quite similar in theme. Character is about to kill himself on Christmas Eve, and an angel appears (in disguise) and shows him all the things that would happen if he hadn't been born. Turns out the worlds is a better place with him in it, so he sticks around and lives a good life.

"Scrooged" with Bill Murray is a modern-day comedy version. Murray plays a TV producer who seams to have lost the meaning of Christmas, only to have it returned to him with a thud - followed by a thump, whack, bop & kapow (all by the Ghost of Christmas Present - an angel or fairy or... whatever she is).
