DOROTHY MEAD
(1928-1975)
Biography
Painter, draughtsman and etcher, born in London, where she continued to live and work for some years. Studied at South-East Essex Technical College, Dagenham, with David Bomberg, then followed him to the City Literary Institute (where she met Cliff Holden, with whom she had a close relationship for many years) and the Borough Polytechnic, 1945-51.
She attended the Slade School of Fine art as a mature student, 1956-9, where she effectively became an unofficial teacher and had a strong influence on many students, including Mario Dubsky; she gained a Steer Medal in 1958, as well as several other major prizes, but left having been denied a diploma because of her refusal to attend lectures on perspective, which she considered outdated.
As a founder member of the Borough Group (along with Cliff Holden, Edna Mann and Miles (Peter) Richmond), Mead participated in group shows and did much to disseminate Bomberg's ideas, both in the UK and abroad, notably through her association with Andrew Forge (with whom she had a tempestuous personal relationship for fifteen years).
Mead showed at the London Group in 1947 and was elected its first female president in 1973, working tirelessly to promote the group until she was forced to resign in 1975 due to ill health brought on by cancer. From 1958-9 she was also president of the Young Contemporaries.
Mead suffered much the same fate as her mentor, David Bomberg, never achieving a solo exhibition during her lifetime due to the indifference shown by London dealers in her work at the time.
The Arts Council, London Unviersity and Tate Gallery all hold examples of her work.
