There is no direct train from Newark to JFK. You will have to transfer at least once. That said, you have several options, depending on how long you have to make the transfer and how much you want to spend.
The most expensive, but the easiest way would be to take a cab from Newark to JFK (well, taking a helicopter would be easier and faster, but if you were that rich you would probably have an assistant book it for you). My guess is that would be over $100. It would be better to book a car service for the ride.
I think the best option would be to take the NJ Transit airtrain to Penn Station (about $12, roughly every 20 minutes weekday evenings) then take LIRR from Penn Station to Jamaica Station ($5, runs about every 10 minutes weekday evenings), and the Airtrain from Jamaica to JFK ($5, runs every 8 minutes). The transfers are all easy, and the whole trip should take an hour, maybe a bit longer. You can check the NJ transit schedule at www.njtransit.com and the LIRR/Airtrain at www.mta.info. You have to buy your NJ transit ticket at the airport station, and your LIRR/Airtrain tickets in Penn Station before you get on the train.
The other option would be to take the NJ transit into Penn station, and then take the A subway to Howard Beach and then catch the Airtrain from there. This basically saves you $3, but will take about twice as long as catching LIRR from Penn Station, and the subway can be less luggage-friendly. (You could also take another subway to Jamaica, which takes about the same time as to Howard Beach, but I believe the transfer at Jamaica from the subway to the airtrain is more difficult).

If your husband is flying into and out of JFK, I'd stay away from Newark. The drive is doable, but the Belt Parkway backs up all the time, and the times driving can heavily vary, plus theres $15 in tolls as an average. I frequently go from NJ to LI to visit friends, and I spend that amount ($6 on the inbound Outerbridge, and $9 on the Staten Island bound Verrazano) every time I go back and forth. Newark isnt exactly the safest place to live, but if you really want to, than what has already been said, PATH to WTC to the A, to the Airtrain, is probably his best bet. The other way is possible, but there are always the threat of transit delays going into Penn Station, NY. There was one this morning, and it made everyone at least 20 minutes late for work if not more.

You will have to transfer at Penn Station no matter which route you take. A previous poster suggested the Long Island Railroad, but at 8pm it may actually be quicker to take the subway, which will run much more frequently than the LIRR at night. Instead of taking the A-train to Howard Beach (which is longer and goes through some rather creepy neighborhoods), I'd advise you take the E-train to Sutphin Avenue, which is adjacent to the Jamaica AirTrain station. It takes just over half an hour to get there from Penn Station.

the New Jersey Transit will take you from the airport straight into 34th Street Penn Station in NYC, the NJ transit only comes once an hour so you have to be careful if you have a specific time you need to be in town. check out www.njtransit.com.
