I suggest that you might want to start by finding your local volunteer center. Volunteer centers provide many diverse volunteer opportunities that meet real community needs. Many of the volunteer centers offer youth programs, leadership programs, one-time, short-term, and long-term opportunities. My volunteer center offers a volunteer leadership course for youth, and many of our teen volunteers participate by creating their own projects. Some of them have even taken their programs national and international.
Find your volunteer center through the following links:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
The Points of Light Foundation offers some great reference material for volunteers as well:
http://www.volunteerresource.org
The curriculum offered by Points of Light is taught by our local volunteer center for our youth leaders.
Good luck with your volunteering!

Since you are older than 14 you can join a venture crew. A venture crew is a scouting organization that does community service projects, trips, and much more. Go to scouting.org and click on venture.
