i bought a 3 months old female kitten and she did not get any shots before. i called some vets and it's about $300 for 3 shots and $250 to get her spayed when she is older. does anyone know if there is cheaper clinic to get everything done (please provide address or telephone #)? does the kitten need to have shots before spay?

your quotes are outrageous. there are better ways. the ironic thing is-- the vets who would do spays at "low-cost" spay and neuter clinics will be so much more experinced than the vet who charges $250. And the pice will be so much better with the experinced vet from a low-cost place (typical price $ 30-60). The reason they are so much better at low cost spay clinics is because they do thousands a year and hundreds in a week. A normal vet clinic is LUCKY if they get 5 surgeries a week. I know many veterinarians that go to low cost clinics just to "get experience" because they have not done a spay in so long and go to have the low cost vet 'teach' them.
the best way to insure you are getting a high quality surgery at a low cost place is to first do an interveiw if you can. call and get answers on who teh vet is and how long they have been in spay/neuter business. Ask to even talk to teh vet yourself and ask some questions before you make an appt. so that you can feel comfortable with who will do the surgery. Ask number of surgeries they do in a week and how long they have been doing it. You want someone that has done this type of high volume for at least a number of years. I do about 250 surgeries a week for 10 years and only charge around $30. shots will be around $5-10 a shot. You need to get the first series, then a booster 3 weeks later. after 1 year later-- you only need them every 3 years.
you can get the shots at the same time of surgery-- or wait a different time. the advantage to getting it at time of surgery is that since the vaccines make them feel a little fatigued and under teh weather-- they 'get it over with' all at the same time while recovering from anesthesia.

I think a good vet exam, some worming if needed and starting shots should run around $100 or less. The price of spaying will depend on whether you use a private vet or go to a low-cost clinic. You can look for a clinic near you by going to www.spayUSA.org.

Where I live vets come by once a month to various pet stores and offer shots - followup shots could be gotten there if you keep her on the schedule recommended by the first vet. Our humane society also holds monthly "shot clinics" for distemper and rabies.
Some vets also hold shot clinics in the evenings - a vet tech gives the shot and the vet must be on the premises.
