Ford was, and is, US-based.
However, the UK was the first country outside the US to have a Ford plant. Also, for many years, Ford of Britain acted independently of the rest of the company, building different cars with different engines. It was combined with the German branch in the 1970s to form Ford of Europe.
Ford no longer builds Ford-badged cars in the UK, although it builds Transit vans and chassis-cabs, petrol and diesel engines, Jaguar cars and (for the time being - it's currently up for sale) Aston Martin cars in the UK. The last UK-built Ford car was the BE91 Fiesta, discontinued in 2002.
