Amateur radio buffs still enjoy using it as it is more reliable during very bad weather. Bouncing signals off the ionosphere is a skill in it's self. The military use it for location and beacon recognition.
If you have recently stopped smoking it gives you something to do with those hands that crave for a cigarette.

oh yer, just get a radio with sw and have a listen. my mate is a radio amateur and you still need it to pass the exam
