I am a conservative type. I don't stereotype, but this is a great observation! I think we should have a study, a social census conducted on this observation. It reminds me of a time I visited the food stamps office one early morning to apply for benefits. As me and my room mate waited in line outside, I sort of asked the same question in my head as two individuals were exchanging information about each other's pits. The location was a low income neighborhood. Junk cars all around, a small crowd at every bus stop. I think it is a more fair statement to say "not every minority citizen is a pit bull owner, but every pit bull owner is a minority. Good question. I give you a star for that one. I once had a chihuahua who killed my neighbor's pit bull. The vet performed emergency surgery on the pit bull's throat, but he didn't make it. Fortunately he was able to save my dog after opening his throat.

I do alot of rescue work for pitbulls. I see them all over that are used for a status symbol lower class as you want to call them as well as upper class. They think if they tell people they have a pitbull people will be more afraid to come to close to them. The so called druggies have them to fight or they train them to attack when provoked. This is why as a pitbull owner as well as a rescue group we have so many issues to over come for the breed. As for the people out there that still think they have lockjaw, wake up, no animal has this no matter the breed. Pitbulls have this reputation because they have a strong jaws. The only dog that has more pound per square inch biting power is the Rotti. So its not an epidemic as people think, its just status and stupidity of people looking in.

I am a pit bull owner...I am a professional working woman, single raising three kids by myself. I have owned my pit for almost 6 years now. He is the best dog. I am not poor, nor am I a drug dealer or gang banger. This just happens to be your opinion. I am proud of my pit, he is a very beautiful animal, and very well trained. My oldest son also has a pit and he is a business owner. A legitimate business owner.

I don't know the answer to this question, however, I have experienced/seen the same evidence in my new neighborhood and state.
We moved from the Midwest to New York State and have found that the poorer the dwelling looks, the more large dogs these people own. Many of these dogs are allowed to run around loose. I was stalked by a Pitbull on a TUE and the neighbors Golden Retriever attacked me on a THU while the owner just sat on his snowplow. I never received an apology nor did he inquire as to how I was doing. I am scared to death to step out onto my own property.
The officials here all seem to be inter-related, and they don't come to your aid, if that tells you something.
I wonder if it is the water in these parts of the country?????

We have a lot of homeless here and many of them animals. There is even a free vet place for spaying and shots for them. Many of these dogs are pit bull and rotty mixes. A lot of shepherd. Some of the pets are obviously the owner's pride and joy and you know the person goes without so the dog eats. Others are terribly sad looking, neglected and diseased. I would imagine for these people it is partly protection at night when you sleep in the park or on the beach.
Lots of people are dumping their rotties and Pitts for one reason or another. My Sister in law sews up enough faces every week for me to understand why these breeds are just not family dogs any more. Poorer people cannot afford purebreds and often get their dogs at the animal shelter.
I see more of these dogs lately because I have been forced to move from a wealthy old neighbourhood where all the dogs are family dogs, to an area full of crack and meth houses and nassy old mutts.
Most shelter dogs are not there for any fault of their own. But these dogs, you never know the truth of why they are there. They are affordable for poorer people. Some people buy these dogs because they are easily made into very serious weapons. Beats a gun. I have seen it done. They just don't really know what they are doing.
The tamest sweetest chihuahua is a wolf at heart and capable of becoming vicious at any provocation.
So is a Pitt bull.

Becuase they are the lower class trash, and i know this is true for a fact becuase I live in a scummy neighborhood ( we arnt poor, but we were here with acrage before THEM)
and Litteraly 8-10 poeple here have pitts. Becuase they are druggies, so they have to protect their trailer and nasty dirt trashy offspring while their working at McDonalds or The Dollar store, and they think pitts are the ****. But their not, and they know it. On my property I have a Pure bred Doberman Pinscher, who runs loose around my house ( i have chain linked fencing, so hes not dilbertly scaring people away) and Im the only house in the neighborhood that hasent been robbed, trespassed, harrassed, or vandalized becuase of him. And also they have them becuase they are stupid rednecks who cant afford a purebred dog, and use them for hunting.
And im not saying Pitts are bad, because I beleive that its not the dog, its the Owner, and it has been proven, and i have seen it many times. And thats one of the MAIN reason that5 pitts have a bad rap, and thats becuase the trash who own them give it to them.

LOL! I 've got a better question, why do people with small brains continue to ask the same question over and over again?
Lol! lockjaw is a disease, not an atribute!
edit:
"Staphshire Terrier and the Bull Mastif which create a Pit Bull "
al I, However, pit bull is a term used to describe a variety of bully breeds, the staffordshire terrier and the bull mastiff are not mixed to create the american pit bull terrier. The mix of these two breeds, or any molosser for that matter would constitute a "bandogge".

Why do you care so much? Worry about what YOU do in life! I could say something like "Why is it that all the low-life people with low IQ's always ask prejudice questions?" You sound like an ignorant @sshole when asking questions like this. Don't you know that? Why are you so WORRIED about it? Because even though they don't have as much money as you...they are having MORE FUN??? Quit being miserable. I suspect that with your ignorant comments that you barely make more money than the types that you are referring to. Move out of your parents house and try to make a living on your own. Lets see how far you get! lol

You just can't quit. The reason you see more lower class people who own pit bulls is probably because you live around lower class people. I live in a nice, middle class, area, but there is a VERY bad area (one of the murder capitols of the world) that is about 1/2 hour away. And I see a ton of pit bulls in both areas. I see the druggies who have them because they want to look tough, or have protection from other drug dealers, or whoever. But even most of those dogs are really nice pit bulls that wouldn't hurt a fly. But I see a lot of middle class people who own them too. People like doctors, managers for a company like GM, and a LOT of vets and vet techs. And these people are not what you describe at all. THey are very responsible owners, with very nice dogs. My friends pit bull came into work with her today, and he just loves EVERYONE. I know I can never change your mind, because you will never change mine. And I can see how you precieve pit bulls as being owned by drug dealers and low lifes, because a lot of those people do want pit bulls to look cool. But I know more pit bulls who are owned by middle class responsible people, who would not subject their dog to abuse, or allow any kind of aggression.

Most people who are poor can not afford a pure bred dog but want a companion. They tend to get larger dogs that aren't necessarily pit bulls but a deep chested, muscular, broad-headed dog as a symbolic guesture. Some might want it for social status and others for protection. Then there are the ones who want to make money from illegal dog fighting. Then there are the people who simply love their nature and affection. Contrary to what the media says the Staphshire Terrier and the Bull Mastif which create a Pit Bull are very loving, smart, and calm dogs and are very social. It's the selected few that abuse them for fighting that give them such a bad reputation. They have actually started using them as therapy dogs in hospitals and for search and rescue.
