It may if it’s in the fireplace and not in the chimney. You may have to just grab it with leather gloves on and let him outside. This happened to me but it was in my wood-burning stove! I just opened the stove door and then opened the nearest door and he just flew out.

a chimney sweep will blow air up in the fireplace, and clean out any nesting material. then cover the outside flue with chicken wire. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Bird nesting is the #1 cause of carbon monoxide deaths in homes!

The only way is to start a fire. The bird has no reason to not live in there -- it is safe, protected from rain, and no one bothers it there. If you don't get rid of it, it will build a nest and lay eggs.
