It depends on the child. When I had my First Communion I had a glass animal collection and I got an Angel to put in the middle of my animals. There are any number of appropriate gifts, check your local Halmark store or ask the child's parents for some gift ideas if you can't come up with something. First Communion is a very personal thing for your cousin, she should get a personalized gift for it depending on her tastes.

A symbolic cross...a bracelet or dogtag necklace engraved with a special message...this is a time in a childs life when they are received by God...ignore the ignorance that people post. Religion, beliefs, etc don't matter here. Life is about choices. We live in America and are free to choose what we believe in...or don't~ Make this special day a memorable one for this child and give from your heart!

When I was confirmed Lutheran, I received a bible, a pewter bible book mark, religious literature/books, and it's socially acceptable to give money, too.

As a Catholic, I know that Most people give money for this. Yes the close family will give more personalized religious gifts.
