Are there any recommendations on what routes to take other than I-5? I need to get from San Diego to Monterey Park.

The best suggestion I can make is go as early as you can. Take the toll road at San Juan Capistrano as the fare is inexpensive and it really beats the congestion at the I-5 and I-405 merge. Leaving from San Diego the traffic gets terrible on the I-405/I-5 about Highway 52 and continues up the coast until about Encinitas. Then it generally clears out until San Clemente, then gets really bad if it's anyplace near rush hour (3:30 until about 7:00pm).

If you can, have someone with you to take advantage of every carpool lane - there are several stretches with them. I'd plan about 3-4 hours for the trip if you hit rush hour anyplace along the route.

Oregon Nut & Musikchik have the right ideas, but I would add a few things:

When you leave SD (as early as possible), you need to decide if you want to take the long way (I-15 N to 10 W), or the more direct way. Unless there's a major blockage along the way, you should probably take I-5 up at least as far as the 605. There always seems to be a jam at the 5/805 merge, so there's probably no way around that. The toll road through the San Joaquin Foothills is impractical unless there is a major blockage in Orange County. And if you do take the toll road, the 55 north is usually very busy getting back to the 5. The 5 in OC from Tustin to the 695 is very wide now, so it hopefully won't be too bad. If there's traffic in LA County, you can bypass it by taking the 605 north from the 5 up to the 10, then west to Monterey Park. Come to think of it, that should be your primary route, since the 10 eastbound out of downtown LA could be very bad.

Traffic should not be too bad. It certainly won't be as bad as

Good luck!

Traffic going north on the 5 on a Friday should not be bad at all. Going to San Diego from LA is what will be awful. You can also try the 15 North to the 10 West because the 5 freeway is a parking lot sometimes. The 10 freeway is always a bit awful going from West Covina to El Monte but once you pass the 605 off ramp you're fine. I'm in Monterey Park so have a nice trip!
