i have done this recenrtly, with very good results, i now dual boot between xp and ubuntu 6.10 using GRUB which is what is installed via the live cd. I will say it takes quite a bit of getting used to, but i am getting my head around it and am very pleased with the results!. you can download a firewall via applications and add when you have installed, the standard one appears to be "firestarter" also you can do antivirus the ame way!, but as i understand it this is only needed to scan email to stop passing on any windoze virus that may come via your email if you then forward it to someone else.
There is lots of support(free) out there you can look up a list of linux lug's by simply searching, and i have found these very informative and welcoming for "newbies"
Give it a go, it is very good.

You can install it on a portable hard drive if it is big enough. (min3 - 10 gigs) You can also let ubuntu manage the partitioning on the internal hard drive. It will shrink the xp part of the disk and install itself. It is actually better that XP is on first as winbloze doesn't like to be installed second.
I use ubuntu without a firewall and have never had any breaches. I do use an anti virus (AV anti vir for linux). Setting up a firewall involves scripts and so far you don't need one but as linux gets more popular you will. you can get them through synaptic.
However. when i installed 6.1 on my partition I had a helluva prob with the internet. Here is what to do. When you install the net don't allow it to start on boot. Always start it manually using pon and finish it before exiting with poff. that way it works and never crashes.
Ubuntu forums at the ubuntu site is great for help and you will be suitably impressed with the OS once you've got through the leaerning parts. I like it and would use it all the time if there was something better than vml or wine.

i'm not sure about the firewall on linux, but you can make another parttiion and install linux on the partion which would make a double boot system. it might be better to get another 40gig drive to do this on. i suggest a 40 incase you don't like the linux OS. don't try to install it on the same partition as XP. you'll get problems and conflicts with both the OS's.

A live cd runs from the CD itself and doesn't install on your PC. This is to allow you to try it out.

I am so bewildered by your question - that I would say YES - you are SO technau-fait can do whatever you want!

I just invented "Technau-fait" especially for you - shall we do all we can to make it catch on?

I think it was inspirational!

Taking 'tech' from 'technical' and 'au fait' from "abreast, well-informed, in touch, up-to-date" etc.
