Heres the thing: the unifying thing about the "Big Four" (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) is that they're all team sports. That's why they tend to be grouped. Hell, at this point NASCAR, tennis, and golf are all more popular than hockey. It simply remains up there because it always had been up there.
That said, the NHL is regaining its footing, while NASCAR's ratings were down in 2006. Hopefully that will change with ESPN/ABC taking over for NBC.
Thank God for picture-in-picture so I can watch my Red Wings and the race at the same time. : )

Well, I do not know how it compares to hockey. I live in the South so it seems to me that it replaced hockey long ago. But I guess up North folks love their hockey more than Nascar. All that said, I do NOT think the popularity of Nascar will continue to grow as it has. It has quickly risen in recent years, but has forsaken it roots in doing so. Nascar has, as the phrase goes, "forgot where it came from." So I think it is more of a fad right now, and will fizzle out in coming years.

With the possiblity of someone else already educating the questioner to the facts, NASCAR is already, and has been for sometime, the number two sport in America.

You starred your own question even though it is a lame question?
The 4 major sprts are team sports, and NASCAR will surplant basketball, baseball and football, but I see hockey moving up as fans get disgruntelled with underachieving, overpaid showoffs forgetting the love of the game is what got them there to begin with.

I figured it was already number one since NASCAR has more fans than any other sport in America.

In my book, hockey doesn't even come close. Too, much brutal, face to face, violence. NASCAR is a league of extraordinary gentlemen.
