I have been told that certain colors can make a space look small, and certain colors can make a smaller place appear to not be so small. When it comes to earth tone colors for the living room, kitchen, and bathroom what would you suggest when it comes to making a smaller space not appear so small?

As a rule of thumb, the lighter the color paint you choose, the larger the room will appear. Dark colors will make the room appear smaller. Also, warm colors, such as red, orange, and yellow, expand and jump out. Cool colors, such as blue, violet, and green, contract.

Also, a continuance of colors from one room to another will give the illusion of a bigger space. Follow the same color trends and keep the colors flowing so the rooms do not look so broke up.

Lighter colors and bigger furniture make a room look bigger (I know it sounds counterintuitive with the furniture. It seems like smaller furniture would make the room look bigger, but I've heard it doesn't, and agree based on my parents' place).
So instead of chocolate brown, maybe pick taupe or khacki. Or only paint certain walls. I tried this with some brownish and yellowish walls; since they were not all painted I think it had more depth.

Also, leave the ceiling white so the room doesn't appear to close in on you.

Keep away from colors that are too dark or too bright.
