Ask your boyfriend what would be a traditional hostess gift for the event. You want to honor them without disrespect to the family. He would know better than anyone. Say "hoa wei doa" (how-way-dow) which means "tastes good". This will break the ice!

bring any red toy, better a toy dragon, wrap in red! Red is Chinese color.
Its dumplings eating time, don't bring any foods. They may give you a nicely wrapped present after dinner. Don't unwrap it right there as Americans do, Say xie-xie (thanks) and open it after you've left. Be careful about table manners. Do not start on any dish before your hosts and let them fill your plate if they want to. There are likely to be so many dishes starting with the cold foods and ending with some fruit salads. Hot dishes will feature for sure. Dumplings is a must. They may toast to you with wine glasses. Be cheerful and relaxed. Enjoy your dinner on 18th.
Good luck

I am sure your boyfreind mum would not mind even if you give her a box of chocolate. Hope this help.

Ask your boyfriend...he is the one that knows his familly better than any body else...and he will tell you what his parents will like to see added on thieir table celrbrating this HOLIDAY...Also If you do not met them yet before this visit during your visit try to be open ...honest...sincere and answer their questions if they have any truthfull...and with the proper respect. Do not try to fake it, just to give a great impression...just be yourself is the best policy!!!...If you allready met them, before this ocasion do not worry...you got aproved...that's why they invited you, to celebrate with then the CHINESE NEW YEAR...You got invited because truthfully they allready consider you familly...Have a great CHINESE New Year and great good luck to all of you.

Call his mother and ask if there is anything she would like you to bring. Offer to bring a bottle of wine ( if they drink), desert or an appetizer. If she says for you not to bring anything don't be offended. Then ask your boyfriend what her favorite type of flowers are.
