I don't want to get drawn into the argument but I'm longing for the day when I can go out for an evening and not come home:
needing to put all my clothes to the wash because they stink;
needing to jump in the shower because I stink of stale smoke;
coughing and with a blocked nose and rough throat;
needing to bathe my sore watering eyes.

There will be a smoking in public places ban and smokers will smoke less and buy less and die less. It will cost the UK nation in extra pensions and the money will have to be funded in another way - income tax being an option. The smokers will be better off and the non-smokers worse off. If the tax on cigarettes is raised to cover the short fall it would be the fairest way.

The first anniversary of the smoking ban in Scotland is next month. Take heart in England you do not have a total ban. This government like all others that outstay their welcome try to introduce draconian measures because they feel the public will just go along with them. The next on the list will be obese people or drinkers so watch this space. The government want healthy people so they will work all their lives and pay their taxes so never needing government assistance as in the social services (biggest budget) and the N.H.S. (next biggest)

As a non-smoker, I don't enjoy getting home after a night at the pub with my clothes and hair reeking of fags, but I do believe that people should be free to make their own choice about smoking.
There just needs to be better provisions for smokers in public places and I think you'll find this will happen. One pub I know has developed an outside area with patio heaters for smokers to go to for a smoke. They are ahead of the game and I think the pressure of keeping drinkers who smoke coming into pubs will drive initiatives like this.
And the tax on ciggies is a tremendous source of revenue for the government. If this revenue stream disappears, we'll only see it slapped on somewhere else. They'll probably start taxing us on how much air we breathe.

I do not know about that I use to think the same thing here in Canada about the loss of money to the government but they are slowly banning them here I think. some places you can not smoke in bars any more yet they are still allowing then in Casinos but I am sure not for long soon I am sure the only place we can smoke is in our homes and not out side.
It will all come down to Health issues

I completely disagree with a smoking ban. Because people chose to smoke and kill themselves and others and it is a free world. I do not see people in the 1000's dying of 2nd hand smoke.
Also I am Canadian and we do have a smoking ban in restaurants in some cities.

You have all missed to point on the smoking ban, it has nothing to do with health or passive smoking, it has everything to do with it being an experiment to see how far the government has us under control and how far we can be pushed before revolting. Think about it !!

As a smoker myself,i do agree that smoking should not only be banned in public places,but should be TOTALLY banned!but this corrupt,dictating government wont ban it altogether as it lines their pockets with cash to much!
Its one thing saying you can only smoke in certain places,isnt that dictation??????????

If we have to give up something we enjoy, we should be given the help for free. I dont think it is fair after all these years to be dictated to like this and made to feel like a leper. Yes, I have wanted to give up for years and have tried and failed. Trying again! But although I know it is for my health I should give up why should I have to pay to feel ill and give up something which kept me calm and sane. It should be a free treatment then maybe more of us would manage it!
