I live in the D.C. metro area and want to go somewhere this weekend that is NO MORE THAN 4+- HOURS AWAY.

I've been to NYC, Williamsberg, and Richmond recently. Boston and Charlottesville would be too far a drive for us.

Where else could I go for a quiet, relaxing, and fun family weekend?

Charlottesville, VA is only about two hours from DC.

I assume you mean 4 hours by car?

Baltimore is great - only about an hour away.

The Eastern Shore area of Maryland is also nice.

North Carolina's outer banks are outstanding and would be about 4.5 hours by car.

Are you a snow lover? How about one of the "local" ski areas? Wisp is about 3 hours, Whitetail, Liberty, and Roundtop are all less than two hours, or the Canaan Valley in WV is about 3 hours. Ski conditions are the best they've been in a few years. Most of these places also have snow tubing.

Philadelphia is about 2.5 hours. Lot's of history there.

The Inn at Perry Cabin at St. Michaels, MD is beautiful and the food is outstanding. Enough people live there that you should have some shops and places to eat to choose from. Don't stay at the harbor in if you go to St. Michaels. There are some good B&Bs too.

Hatteras National Seashore is fantastic, but perhaps not this weekend. It is beautiful but there won’t be many good places to dine out that will be open this time of year.

The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina is luxurious, close, and probably pretty reasonable right now.

Last, stay on the harbor in Annapolis for a weekend, tour the naval academy, tour some 200 year old homes, do some shopping & eat some crabs.

Seven Springs Ski Resort in the Laurel Highlands of PA. There is skiing, tubing, and sleigh rides.

Lancaster county, PA to visit the Amish (it will be quiet). There are also a lot of outlet malls for shopping.

I live in Pittsburgh, PA. There is lots to do here. We are about 4.5 hours away. There is the Andy Warhol museum, Science Center, Art and History Museums, Pittsburgh Zoo, Penguins Hockey games, Station Square, South Side, Lots of art galleries, etc.

Most answers above are very good, but Harpers Ferry, West VA should also be mentioned. Going there is like going back to the 19th century. Annapolis MD is also interesting. The Shenandoah Valley in VA is beautiful, but I wouldn't think it would be as nice in the winter as it is the rest of the year.

It's called B.C. Day? I'm from Canada and I have never heard of that. In Alberta/Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories/Nunavut we have always called the first Monday in August a Civic/Bank Holiday.

Ocean City is still fun in the winter, there are still things to do,and the ocean is really neat in the winter time.

Have you checked out Jamestown? I went there for a long weekend this fall and had a good time.
