It sounds like he doesn't want some capitalist, pop-culture holiday to be the occasion to show his love for you. What means more to you? The stupid gifts and the pink and purple holiday, or the love itself? If it's the former, do HIM a favor and break up with him. If it's the latter, reevaluate what it is you really want from him, and whether that requires a certain holiday to express.

in my opinion valentines day is a day that two people show each other how much they care and love each other. If a guy i was dating said that to me then i would think that he didnt love me or care about me. good luck!!
