Having had first hand experience of a cousin who used to bleed almost continuously including gigantic clots it frightening but generally controllable. Coughing up blood is a sytem of the nose bleed where blood has got into the stomach clotted- and caused you to vomit until its cleared the blood out (thats also personal ex-perience of having had tonsils out and blood ending up in my stomach!). The scalding can be caused by stomach acid in the vomit. If you are pale it is more likely to be from the stress and shock of a nasty bleed my cuz used to be a white as chalk and frightened as hell but otherwise fine. She bleed one time for over an hour in a two hour trip to Hobart and it was a mess but common thing for her and doctors had advised the cotton wool in nose to help the blood accumalte and clot (appart from helping to stop the mess and fear of blood running everywhere). Pinching the nose really hard (as per normal first aid to put pressure on a bleeding area to slow/stop the bleed and let the vessel/s clot and seal off). My cuz in the begginging used to tilt her head back but that used to causse the blood to run down her throught and kep the vomitting going (we think now that she go this instructions wrong) so tilt your head forward. I dont think that an ambulance or ER room is necessary but if after taking all of the correct procedures to stop the bleed and it is still on progress after half an hour or so I would see a doctor because even if they cant do muchy more about it... i needs to be on the record as if it becomes frequent and severe they need to operate and seal off the offending blood vessels.
As a suggestion.. if this is a priodic thing, make sure your family and friends are awqre of it and how to treat it so that they wont panic as i know I just about did the first time and I am sure that it only made things worse for my cuz.

Yes, actually, it is fairly common. Chances are some of the blood ended up running down the back of your throat and getting swallowed. That made you nauseous. Nausea makes you vomit, vomiting makes your nose bleed worse, and also gives you the burning/painful sensation in your throat. That's from the stomach acid. Drink a little bit of milk or some Pepto-Bismol and it will go away.
Next time, put cotton inside each nostril, pinch both of them shut, and lean forwards for 5 minutes. If it's still bleeding after that, repeat for 10 minutes. If it's still bleeding after that, go to the ER. Heavy nosebleeds for no reason are usually suggestive of a hematologic issue.
To go to the ER for a simple nosebleed, unless you suspect a fracture or you've tried the above method and it didn't work, is a waste of money, a waste of time, and occupies a doctor who would otherwise be attending to something important.
These answers are an EXCELLENT reason why you should not trust important medical issues to Yahoo! Answers. Other than myself there is ONE person who has the slightest idea what they are talking about, and since nobody loses any credit for "thumbs down" answers, they don't have any problem with posting garbage. At least this time the stupidity fell on the side of caution; I've read several questions where the answers, if followed, probably would have killed the person!
All the best,

My first question is: Are you bulemic? Do you make yourself throw up after eating? If so, even MORE so, get to your doctor and fast! You are ill, and if you are Bulemic as well, you could die from the bleeding. You may have just an infection that is causing this, and that does NOT mean that it is not very, very serious and it Could cause you to lose enough blood to become disabled or to die. Never fool around when blood is coming from your throat, especially, this is a serious problem, and you should be in the emergency room. The emergency room cannot turn you away because you have no money. The law is that you must be treated, anyway. Something that should not be going on in your body, IS going wrong with your body. Please, go to public Health, your doctor, a free clinic, E.R., and find out what caused this, or you could do it again and again. Please, get this taken care of and get healthy! 'K'????????????

I have had a lot of nose bleeds.
It does take a while to stop once it starts I also know that the blood also runs down the back of your throat and in to your stomach. This can also make you feel a little sick to your stomach.
Try to lay back tip your head back. stop the flow until it clots don't blow your nose for a while after until your sure its stopped running. then start gently removing the clot as not to start it again.
Yes when you lose blood it does make you feel light headed.
The burning throat concerns me a bit.
This may be an indication you have a bug which may have been causing you to blow your nose a lot causing the nose bleed.
Also If this becomes frequent you may need to have to have the weak blood vessle cortorized to prevent excessive nose bleeds.
If the nose bleeds begin to interfere with your life see you doctor.

This does not sound like anything you want us in here advising you on.
Go to your doctor or ER.
This sounds like you are definitely in need of medical care!
A nosebleed is one thing, but a burning throat is a serious red flag.
Ice can help slow the bleeding down, but get professional help asap.

It's not normal. It could be a sign of internal bleeding (not to scare you). You might want to go to a doctor, but to try and stop it...use a tissue or rag, pinch the nose at the bridge and lean your head forward (not back, this will make the blood drain into your stomach).

You seem to be having more of a problem than a simple nose bleed. Do you use cocaine, or snort other drugs? Either way, I would strongly recommend that you go you local emergency room to get checked out.

NO! It is not normal for it to go on for that long! You should definitely go in and get it checked out. I am an EMT and we get these calls all the time and have to take people to the ER. Lean forward and pinch your nose off right at the bridge in the meantime.

I am a medical first responder. This is considered an emergency. Call 911 or go to the ER!
Hang in there!

Not normal at all. Go to the ER or call 911. You shouldn't be on here.
