I've never heard of Buddhism being the catalyst of wars on teh same level as teh "big three". All Buddhism says is Be Happy and Don't Hurt Others. Why can't the other ones be taht simple?

Frankly, I think there's a big reason the taliban were hiding in caves 6 months after they blew up the buddha statues: peaceful buddhist monks cursed them.

And although they may be considered the least violent of the big 3, there is a violent side of buddhism:

In a worsening climate of impunity as Sri Lanka falls into civil war, Buddhist militants have continued their campaign against Christianity, attacking churches and threatening Christian schools. Christians in Sri Lanka are calling for help from the international community following a rapid deterioration of law and order in the past week.

[TamilNet, Sunday, 10 December 2006, 03:29 GMT]
Amid growing violence in Sri Lanka that Church leaders have likened to the 'killing fields' of Cambodia, Christians in the island are facing increased persecution from Buddhist extremists, Release International reported this week. Christians in Sri Lanka are appealing to the international community for help, RI which monitors persecution of churches around the world, said. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) also says Christians in Sri Lankan are facing more intense persecution as mob violence becomes an increasingly visible trend in the country.

Sri Lankan Christians are facing more intense persecution as mob violence becomes an increasingly seen trend in the country, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) has told Christian Today. As fighting between the Sri Lankan army and Tamil rebels continues, mob violence against churches and individuals across the country has increased dramatically. On 22 November 2006, the Lighthouse Church, Mawatura, Gompola in Kandy District, was attacked while the pastor and a church worker were inside. Rocks were thrown at the building, shattering the front window, and the church worker was seriously injured when a rock hit him on the head, CSW report.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam are know as the faiths of Abraham, because all start with God instructing Abraham to kill his son (Islam disagrees with the other two religions about which son). So you start with a psychopathic god instructing a man to prove his faith by killing his son, and then move on to various other murders, genocides, tortures, etc., and you wonder why the faiths of Abraham are not as peaceful as Buddhism? Just imagine for a minute how much better the world would be if the god of Abraham had given Moses a commandment like Jain gave his disciples, "do not cause suffering unto others."

Christianity used to be very violent, Today, it's peaceful, and mild at violence. Islam still isn't 100% peaceful, they should stop these violent acts like Palestinian/Israeli conflict, terrorism, hatred, violence against women etc. Judaism has always been peaceful, well except for those Sanhedrin and other Jewish leaders that wanted Jesus dead, but Romans crucified Jesus, not the Jews, well anyway, I don't find Judaism very violent, many Jews were killed nearly 80 years ago by Non-religious people------that was Hitler and the Nazis-----they weren't even Christians. So Christianity and Judaism are peaceful these days, unlike Islam.

I just love the American version of Buddhism, simplified to a bunch of nice monks sitting around with flowers meditating. There were Buddhist kings that started wars. Buddhism doesn't have the sort of atocities under it's belt simply because there were Buddhist leaders who were powerful enough to do it.

since when is christianity violent? Spanish Inquisition? Those in authority using Christ to gain control over the people. I don't believe they were christian at all because murder and torture is not a christian tenet.
Crusades? a response to muslim invading for centuries.

Salem witch trials...another example of using Christs name to control people. Murdering witches is not a christian tenet and most of the people killed were falsely accused christians.

I don't know of any christians that are violent like we've seen in islam. Not true born again believers.

that simplicity evades much of the world because it knows little or nothing of the best of oriental philosophy.

my first book was an anthology of japanese, chinese and korean literature.

one verse suggested: i piss on buddha.
i also included a copy of an old ink painting from the oriental archives of the british museum of a monk chopping up a statue of buddha.

please understand no offense intended.
you i hope will understand what i am trying to say and what they meant with their words and works.

and have you read salvapelli radhakrishnan's ( sp ? ) history of indian philosophy

unfortunately the western / middle eastern world allows little of free / open philosophical discussion these days.

and conservative religious fanatics would lead us all like sheep to slaughter one another.

what would you suggest to really rid the world of such ignorance / violence ?

Christianity teaches the same thing. If all were Christians we'd live happily ever after. Christianity is not a catalyst of wars. Historically, wars were started to fight the christians. They defended themselves, same for the jews.

Buddhism says a lot more then that. But Christianity is a peaceful religion.

No, because you have had the privilege of having Christians fight the wars for you. Someone has to fight the forces of evil against those who want peace. Christians would love peace and seek it but if you try to kill us or our families we will fight.

It no where in the Bible said to go and have crusades. Jesus must have wept tears when He saw all the bloodshed. The inquisition was because the catholic church didn't want to lose control.
