Any dense material, such as most all metals including aluminum and ball bearings, will overheat in the microwave. The microwaves cause the atoms of a material to vibrate extensively. This in turn causes heat to build up in your food thereby cooking it. In a metal, the atoms are so closely bonded that the friction is much greater and creates more heat. In a metal like aluminum foil, it is cut so thin that there is no where for the heat to dissipate which creates very very quick overheating and possibly a fire.

You can safely put a small amount of aluminum foil in a microwave oven but there must also be a fair amount of exposed food to absorb the microwave energy and thus be heated. For example, some cooks wrap the boney ends (only) of chicken legs in a bit of foil to shield the bone and keep it from stinking.
The problem is with the magnetron, a vacuum tube that generates the microwaves. It needs to have a "load" to absorb the electromagnetic waves it generates. That load is the food, or more correctly the water molecules in the food. This is the reason you NEVER run an empty microwave. Without a load, the magnetron will destroy itself because it overheats. I suppose the myth about aluminum foil got started by folks who tried to "nuke" an old-fashioned TV dinner and destroyed their oven because there was no food exposed. Most experienced engineers know that the public is just too stupid to use good judgement, so they turned a grey-area into black and white. Hence, "no aluminum foil!"

I've burned down a microwave with aluminum. It was fun.

It won't harm the oven, it will just arc across the sharp edges. If paper is in there as well, it may catch fire. Put a ball bearing in. Nothing will happen.
