Once you decide how long you want to have reception *usually 5 hours long* then you call the DJ. It's the DJ's job to have enough music to last for your whole reception. When you meet with the DJ you can tell him the type of music you want played. The DJ will help you with all the other details.

All of the weddings i went to went from right after the supper and went till one in the morning, again it depends on what time your supper will be over and the speaches as well. So I would say from seven till one would be between 65-80 songs, but again if your having the bride throw her flowers and the groom do the garter in between somewhere druning the music, you would stop the music or have a certain theme song for both and do that, as well if speaches are going to be made in between songs than you wont need as much. This is how you would figure how many songs... count how many hours there will when the music is started and when the receptions stops (usually 1am) than take that number of hours and mulitply it by 60 to get your minutes, than divide that number by four (which is common legth of a song 4 or 5 mins) than the answer will be how many songs, you can either give or take about ten songs, always have extra just incase, you can always have songs played at the beginning again at the end, but try not to over lap more than twice.

Receptions can last anywhere from 2 hours to 6 hours, depending on the reception hall and the wishes of the bride and groom. It's really up to you.
I'd suggest giving your DJ or band a list of songs you'd like to hear and a list of songs you don't want to hear. A good DJ or band will respect your wishes. Say if you don't want to hear "Macarena" put that on your Do Not Play list. Also make sure that the dinner music will be softer and lighter, like light jazz or instrumental.

Let your DJ worry about all those details (or live band) Depending on what kind of reception you are having, it can go from 4 to 6 hours, you will want to work these details out with your entertainment before hand, if the time runs over, you will be charged money for it.

Most receptions last around 4 hours, but it really just depends on the amount of guests that you will be having, and what you want with your wedding.
Mine will be right around 6 hours total- from the cocktail hour through dinner and 4 hours of dance music.
If it is a full meal, 4 hours isnt too long. If it is just Cocktails, a few hours will be pretty much all you will need.
As far as your songs go... just pick about 300, give them to the dj and let him pick- they will all be songs you like.
I told my dj what songs and music genres NOT to play, which made it easier on him, allowing him to be as creative as he wants and mix it up a bit.

Dont do it by songs. You will be finding song lists forever. Get a dj and tell him or her what type of music you and your family enjoys and see what they come up with. If you plan out exactly what song and a particular time, it wont end up well. Just plan out a timeline of what time you want a certain dance to happen. What time the toasts will be said. and so on. You could end up with over 100 songs you want to play and only like 30 actually get played. And receptions last until the bride and groom leave. So two to four hours.

i don't know how long they should last, but most places i've seen charge for 4 hours at the least, and then anywhere to 6 or more!! personally, i think 3 or 4 at the most. i mean, there's only so much you can do there to keep guests entertained, right? after a while, they will get bored and begin to leave.

all depends on how long your liquor liscence is good for and how long your guests will stay. i am personally renting a sound system and programming song lists into my laptop. if i run out of songs i will be able to just play one of those again. or put my whole library on shuffle.
