So I finally went into the dentist after my insurance kicked in and they did some xrays... She then tapped on my lower back tooth with this metal thing and I didnt have any sharp pains except for the feeling of discomfort of her hitting my tooth. Then she said I needed a root canal and since I hate pain, I did no schedule one. Is a root canal necessary even tho my tooth does no hurt? Do people get it done just because the dentist suggests it or after it causes them discomfort?

Ask her why she feels a root canal is necessary. Does the tooth show signs of infection on the x-ray?

It can be infected or have other trauma without actively hurting. When my two front teeth broke, it didn't hurt. I didn't start crying until AFTER I realized I broke my teeth because I knew how expensive it would be to fix them. The nerve could also be dead, and not infected. It hurts when it is infected.

Root canals do not hurt. The only thing that hurts is the initial needle to numb it up. Your mouth muscles may ache awhile from having to hold your mouth open for awhile, but the pain is trivial. I think stubbing my toe the other day hurt alot worse than the root canal. Root canals certanly hurt alot less than abcesses. Colorado, your teeth were probably also abscessed. Women also have a higher pain threshold than men, so you could be just a wimp.

i work at an endodontist office. It's a doctor that specializes in rootcanals. we see many people that are afraid of dental treatment. What happens is there is an infection that keeps growing at the end of your roots and as time passes, the infections worsens. It may not hurt now but within time, it will just keep getting worse and maybe by then, extracting the tooth will be the only option. the purpose for the rootcanal is to clean out the infection and sterilize your tooth. So if you do need one, get it done or you may regeret it later

Honey trust me if the dentist says so then it must be done, unless you prefer an extraction because this is the consequence of ignoring the problem. I had root canal twice and it doesn't hurt but anesthetics is a must. It can also lead to jaw bone infection, iritis and stuff you wouldn't rather like to hear about. If you don't do it you will regret it in couple of years. IT DOESN'T HURT! :)
