43, but if a driver gets sick or is unable to finish the race the number can change if he has another driver sub for him, if the driver subbing is already in the race and had been knocked out due to a crash or engine failure then the number stays at 43 but if the driver subbing is someone who did not qualify for the race then the number of drivers can change according to the number of drivers that subbed for any driver(s) that were not able to finish the race due to illness or whatever. EX: Rudd has the flu and is unable to finish the race at lap 350 of 500 and Vickers did not qualify for the race and is standing by in case Rudd needs a relief driver, Vickers climbs in and finishes the race in Rudds car, therefore 44 drivers were able to race in that race. Altho not at the same time. Only a max of 43 can be on the track at the same time, but 44 drivers were allowed to race in the race.

The standard size field in a NASCAR race is 43 cars. No more than 43 cars can race in the actual event. I can recall at least one time last year during a Busch race that the field was less than 43.
