Both tests, MRI and MRA, are the same in how they work (using waves of radio frequency and a magnetic field to provide clear photos) but involve different areas of the body.

MRI, magnetic resonance imaging, provides clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues. It allows doctors to see body parts that are often not visible with other types of image testing.

MRA, magnetic resonance angiogram, provides pictures of blood vessels inside the body. It is used to detect problems with the blood vessels and will show the blood flow and the condition of the blood vessel walls.
