Do you mean dirty tap water, or water out in the wilderness? Tap water only needs a water purfier attached to your fawcet. If it's bacteria that concerns you just boil it. You can purify water in the out doors by taking a lager container partially filled with the dirty water and putting a smaller container in the center. You need to put something a little heavy in it so it doesn't float and tip over. Then cover the top of the larger container with a plastic sheet. Place something on the plastic, directly over the smaller container inside. The water will become condensation and drip into the smaller container. It takes forever. You may also want to boil the water. If your planning on hiking or camping, they sell tablets in sporting stores that will purify water.

Put 25 drops of bleach (sodium hypochloride) into 10 litres of water. (medically 12 drops is equal to 1 ml.) Shake/stir. Wait at least 30 minutes before you drink it. (If the water blurred, contains particules etc. it's useless, you have to filter it first.)

depends on how dirty, but boiling it should sterilize it, although let's say something was dead and rotting in there, well, i wouldn't trust boiling it to do the trick, find new water, drink your own pee would be better at that point.

Boil it for ten min. If you are still unsure about it, buy a jug or drinking water from your local store.

Usually if you bring it to a full boil for around 5 minutes it should pretty much sterilize it.
