The actual piercing doesn't hurt at all. It is the healing that hurts. There are dangers in piercing anything on your body (of course) but I have never heard of anyone losing their taste. I had mine done for a very long time (8years) and nothing like that happened. My friend even had a bad piercing and she lost all her taste buds temporaly from a yeast infection--but she was fine when it healed.

I had mine done twice. The first time it didn't hurt at all for the needle to go through. The second time it hurt a little because it had to go through scar tissue from when I had the first piercing. The most painful part is when it temporarily swells up after it's pierced. You can relieve that by making sure the piercer uses a long enough barbell and by having cold things the first day or so. You don't lose your taste buds at all. I haven't had any trouble at all. Don't worry about it...it's way less painful than having facial piercings done like your eyebrow or cartilage piercings...
Good luck!

********. You cannot lose your taste, that has nothing to do with putting a hole in your tongue. That's your taste buds/ Your tongue is a muscle. There is no skin for this to tear through. Therefore there is no ripping or anything just a clean straight hole. You can barely feel it when it is pierced.
