Yes, the way to understand God, is by learning about Jesus. Jesus is God in the flesh.
The way that I became close to God, when I wasn't even sure if He was there or not, was, I sat down one day when I was alone and talked to Him. I told Him that I did not know Him or love Him. Would He please help me if He was there. He did.
I had an experience that frightened me so much with in two weeks after my prayer, that I started asking other people if they believed in demons. In my church group, this was not talked about. Everyone thought that demons were only present in Bible times.
My husband and I were invited to dinner with a group of people from that same church and I brought up the experience that I had had. They were all Spirit Filled Christians. They told me and showed me in God's Word, the Bible. That demons are present today.
I turned to Jesus. I then understood that Jesus has already overcome Satan when He died on the cross. I understood that Jesus blood covers me and I belong to Him because I accepted Him as my Lord and Savior.
I understood that I have sinned. I was born sinful. That I needed a savior. That because Jesus is perfect and never sinned, He was qualified to become the sin that I had committed and His death was in my place so that I can live forever.
Now, I love God and Jesus and His Holy Spirit because they first loved me. God loves you too. God bless you as you form a relationship with His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

Wow that is an interesting one.
Unfortunately I am not qualified to answer as I have given up seeking long ago, being tired of being an atheist is understandable though. I am agnostic, not that it gives me a sense of superiority or a false belief that God might give me a break, it is just where I am at right now.
I would suggest spending time volunteering to help others in need. I wouldn't go through the 101 religion choices looking for the Truth, because you will find contraditions in all of them. But if you spend your time helping others, maybe in a shelter, or on some campaign, you may find that through those efforts you learn a thing or two about God. You may not, but at least you have spent your time bettering society, and that has to be better than preaching a certain belief system at others.
The truth is that if you are ready to find God you will find him. It just depends where you look. If you go to a Budhist temple with a completely open mind, you will probably find God there. If you goto a Shaman you will probably find God there. Its all determined on your preconceived ideas of the truth, and what feels comfortable to you. Atheism is uncomfortable, so find something that works, but please don't spend any time afterwards trying to force feed your findings on others.
Good Luck, I am sure all will work out

Absolutely!!! It was something more formal, yet I used to talk to Him whatever the reason and because I kept forward to my own ambition and desires, when He gave me avertisements I saved none and did my way going into more and more trubles! Into an end, within a deep depresion, He saved my life (!!!) the very second I left away of all my deep desires... There, empty heart, I was filled with God's Light and Peace and Love - a complete New LIFE, a new body, a New Vision over the past and the future :) :) :) Yes, He is my Saviour!!!

God is not lost. We are the ones lost. To get where I think you are trying to go, you must first be saved. Go to (Romans 10:9) It states that if you confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, then you shall be saved. Once you become saved, I suggest much prayer because it is the only thing that will sustain you. Pray for understanding before reading the Bible.
P.S. The only sin that will send you to hell is not believing. It is good to ask for forgiveness for our sins and try to live right.
I hope this helped you some. I'll pray for you!

You must completely understand that to know God or any higher power is to have faith. Faith is not based on truth or reality. You don't have to be an atheist, either. Wait until you die to know the truth. In the meantime, do the best you can and avoid mistreating others. If you're that intelligent and do those two simple things, you will end your life with a positive conscious. If a reward exists in the afterlife, you'll deserve it.
And why don't you check out whydoesgodhateamputees.com to study how irrational Christianity is.

You sound like a good target for the fundies. "proof atheists feel empty." First of all, atheism is dumb since you have to have faith in there being no god just like the rest of them have faith there is one.
I'm agnostic, but personally I have a feeling there is some higher power, but I'm not arrogant enough to try to tell anyone what it is. It's beyond our scope to understand at this point (most likely always will be but who knows).
Go to a beach and watch the sun set. Watch it rise. It's hard for me to argue there is nothing above us that created it. Everything natural is perfectly designed in this world. The circle of life, a volcano destroying but then creating; destruction and creation a circle of life in itself.
You can say God is energy, or everything natural, or a dude with a beard up in a heaven (the latter being the least likely to me). We are energy, and energy may never cease to exist;so maybe we're a little fraction of "God." Point is, I don't know, you don't know, the Christians almost definitely don't know, no one knows for sure. Don't hand yourself to a bunch of people trying to give you answers to things that no one can truly answer, and wind up lying to yourself. If there is a God, it is probably right in front of us, staring us in the face.

Didn't know God was lost...
Acts 8:27 So Philip started out. On his way he met an Ethiopian official. The man had an important position. He was in charge of all the wealth of Candace. She was the queen of Ethiopia. He had gone to Jerusalem to worship.
28 On his way home he was sitting in his chariot. He was reading the book of Isaiah the prophet.
29 The Holy Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot. Stay near it.” 30 So Philip ran up to the chariot. He heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you’re reading?” Philip asked.
31 “How can I?” he said. “I need someone to explain it to me.” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32 Here is the part of Scripture the official was reading. It says, “He was led like a sheep to be killed. Just as lambs are silent while their wool is being cut off, he did not open his mouth.
33 When he was treated badly, he was refused a fair trial. Who can say anything about his children? His life was cut off from the earth.” (Isaiah 53:7, 8)
34 The official said to Philip, “Tell me, please. Who is the prophet talking about? Himself, or someone else?”
35 Then Philip began with that same part of Scripture. He told him the good news about Jesus.
36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water. The official said, “Look! Here is water! Why shouldn’t I be baptized?”
38 He gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the official went down into the water. Philip baptized him.
39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away. The official did not see him again. He went on his way full of joy. 40 Philip was seen next at Azotus. From there he traveled all around. He preached the good news in all the towns. Finally he arrived in Caesarea.

hi, you've already had lots of good leads but here's another one. I really love the messages by andrew wommack ..profound and life changing...and you can download/listen to any of his messages from his radio/tv archives for free from his site-awmi.net. (yes, he seems like a texas hick - which he is - but I think you'll love his style if you give him a chance...not loud, crazy, tele-evangelist type) I also love recommending Ravi Zacharias teachings (free downloads also - rzim.org). He is definitely way way more intellectually-based...great, challenging, messages from a brilliant mind - great for someone that thinks to be a christian, you have to ditch all higher intellectual reasoning. And one more of my classics...Mere Christianity by CS Lewis. Classic for good reason. He was an atheist turned agnostic who eventually became a christian "kicking and screaming and looking for any way out"...again, he was brilliant. Other than those recommendations and those of some of the others, just remember that God wants you to know him even more than you think you do..so don't get discouraged.

First of all, are you convinced that God exists? If you have doubts that God exists, you are fighting a loosing battle. It is hard to find something that you don't think is there.
Second, stop looking for evidence and start looking for Him. Do not read the Bible looking for evidence that God exists. The Bible was not written to prove that God exists. The Bible was written to show us more profoundly the character of God. As you read it, look for how God loves people as compared to how most people love people. Look for how God forgives as compared to how we normally forgive. Look for how God gives another chance (a second chance, a third chance, etc.). Look for how God takes us as we are -- we do not have to become perfect before God will take us. Look for how God wants only the best for you. Don't read the Bible to find God, read the Bible to see what God is like.
Did I answer your question? Not really. Because I think you cannot find the forest since the trees are in your way. God is right there with you. Don't try to find Him, reach out and grab Him.

I would say I consider myself an agnostic, but mainly that's because I got tired of being an "atheist". I know how it feels, having every logical instinct in your body/mind/(soul?) pointing towards an empty, ephimeral, lonely existence where the body dies and, with it, the soul. I've tried looking for "God" in different places, including churches and sh*tloads of drugs, which sort of shouldn't even be together in the same sentence. I haven't found him/her/it. I've managed to understand that the whole point of faith is that you really have to want to believe it. Ignore logic. If that's what you want. If you find the answer, please let me know...
