I hope you have left yourself ample time. You cannot use an expired passport. And, Canada does NOT renew passports. You have to reapply for one all over again.

Even if you have travel plans in the next 4 weeks and have the tickets; it is done by a CASE BY CASE basis and does not guarantee you will get it in time.

Urgent applications
Urgent or express services are available for emergency or compassionate reasons on a case-by-case basis. The applicants must apply in person at a Passport Canada service location, provide proof of travel and have a valid reason for travel.

Oh, an incidently this "PLO" person doesn't know what they are talking about. The cost for an urgent application is $70 (plus passport fee, which isnt $9) or $30 for an express passport (plus passport fee)

If you were born in Canada and leave without a passport to the US you may get back in, But a couple of years ago 2003 the government required all landed immigrants living in Canada apply for a special card (proof of permanent residence) along with their passport to get back in. If you travel outside of Canada and do not have this card, you may not be able to return. Before 911 Canadians didn't need a passport to travel to the US but now they require it. You can pay extra and get your passport in a couple of days. If your passport has only recently expired and you have valid picture id, such as Drivers Licence etc. you can probably use that instead, but take your passport as backup.

No. Part of the new law states that flyers from some other countries, Canada included, need passports to come into the U.S.

Not without a valid passport. Without a passport, your only option is to drive across the border (land crossing don't require a passport until next year).

you need to get a new passport. Hopefully the lines at the passport offices have slowed down. It also take 6 weeks by mail. Just give yourself time to get a new one.

I wouldn't take the chance. Get your passport renewed and save yourself the aggravation of being held up at customs.
