i am looking to get another bourke.

i have a female budgie now.
i was just wondering if since they're about the same size, they could breed. don't want them to. i intend to keep them in the same cage though. and if it would be safer to go with a female...but then i'm afraid they would fight and hurt each other or worse

any insight would be very helpful

No. They are different species, so cannot interbreed.

Its possible they might mate, but not breed. I once had a large male budgie who was always trying to mate with one of my female cockatiels. He was a very dominant male, he also mated with every female budgie he could.. I had to put him in a cage on his own with one female budgie. I assume you have a large cage, putting a new bird into a small cage with an existing bird could cause problems. Birds can be very territorial, in an avery its not to bad because they have room to get away if needed. I have, at times, kept budgies, cockatiels, king quail and even a very gentle galah together in my avery but they must be separated when breeding. Another female might be the way to go, they usually only fight over nest boxes, and males at breeding time, so if you don't intend to breed go with a female.

It is highly unlikely that they will breed. Trust me, I had enough problems getting my budgies to breed. It is difficult to predict if they will fight without taking the time to watch them for hours when you first put them in the same cage.
