I just wanted to ask if it is normal for female papillons, or any dog for that matter, to begin putting on some extra weight after they have been spayed?

My papillon was spayed about a month ago. She's normally 10 lbs, so when she gains a couple pounds it is very noticeable, and my mom said that it's normal for dogs to gain that weight after her surgery, but I just want to make sure that it isn't something more serious.

As far as I know, she's eating the same amount, and playing and excercising the same amount...unless my mom isn't being truthful about spoiling her and giving her extra treats.

It is quite normal for a dog to gain some weight after being spayed. Not only that, but sometimes the coat can change, as well. If you notice the coat dulling a bit and getting a little bit more soft and fluffy (as opposed to more silky and shiny for Papillons), that could be normal too.

They only gain weight, if the owners don't alter the amount of food they feed to the dog. Obesity is NOT a side effect of spaying. It's a side effect of overfeeding. Keep the dog exercised, and feed the right amount of food (this may change from before & after spaying, which is where weight gain occurs. People don't realize the dog's 'metabolism' is a bit different, and they often require a little less food than before.)

it sounds to me like your mom is spoiling your dog behind your back. there is nothing wrong with this and it is a well known fact that smaller dogs can gain weight after a spay.if she gains more than 4-5 lbs in the next couple of months I would ask your vet about your concerns, and try to catch your mom feeding her treats!

It is perfectly normal for her to gain weight, even if shes eating the same amount and exercising the same amount. It has to do with the loss of hormones, and usually dogs keep that added weight. Also don't yell at your mum, shes probably not even feeding her more.

No. If the dog is given enough exercise and has a healthy diet, weight gain won't be related to the spay.

Yes, this is normal. Every female pet I have had spayed has gained a small amount of weight since.

it is very easy to spoil your dog after surgery due to feeling sorry for there pain... but it is also common for dogs to become less active or gain some weight after getting spayed. as long as the weigth gain is not to mush she should be fine.. now if she gains more and is becoming less active i would coonsult your vet.
