Fear of death is a great motivator. One look at a dead body and thinking "that's going to be me someday" has got to be distressing to a being with intelligence but without knowledge. Forever is along time. Oblivion is not a pleasant prospect. Wonder at the universe makes people look for answers. Unfortunately, far too many of the answers create more even questions for which there are no good answers.

Of course, we not only want to be god-like, we will be god-like ( non-existant ) in time.
Religion was invented as a way of beating death. It started back in the stone age and is still with us because it's a pleasant thought that we're not going to actually die, but will live forever.
Common sense says otherwise. In spite of all the promises of religion, we will return to nature from which we came. A thousand years from now we will be as we were a thousand years ago.

no.
How can someone go live each day knowing that you could die at an time and that is it, you don't get punished for leading a bad life, and don't get recognized for the good deeds you have done or died for?
People, in general, are not selfish beings who just think about themselves (I know it sounds like a lot of people, but im not going to stereotype here). It is not like people believe everything just to know that there will be no end...we are not stupid... but we are born with faith and have a strenghtened religion. People don't want to be God-like, they want live as God wants them to..being a kind person. We don't want to live forever on earth, but when the right healthy time comes, out body dies...and our spirits live on forever. It is not like people in the beginning of the religion origin was like 'oh, lets just write we will be immortal because were are selfish and never want to die', it wasn't like that.
it is true...we will live forever...with the right faith

It is an interesting subject. There are theories that exist that argue that religions were created as part of evolution. The basic argument is that the hope of an afterlife or some kind of deity made it easier for people to get through the hardships of survival. It's very ironic when you think about it. Religion is a product of evolution and that religion (not all religions) professes that evolution is false!

Chippy! You're back!!!
Man has an inner want to live for ever.
Even the Bible hints at that truth:
Ecclesiastes 3:11 says: "time indefinite he has put in their heart, . . ."
That desire would remain even if every religion was out-lawed.
Most religions have erroneously taught their followers that life eternal is for right away.
Truth is when we die we cease to exist.
We wait upon God to re-make us ....at the appointed time, to live forever on a paradise earth.
Psalm 37:29

I think that religion was originally set up by God as a way that we could get together and worship him as a people. Because humans are not perfect we have seen a decline from the church that God originally set up so it is hard for some people to believe that religion is of God because of all the fallacies and falsehoods brought in by man. The trick would be to find the religion that is run by God and join that.

history proves God exists. just look at all the writing of the world. God created us (and he did so, ever so perfectly - just look at how perfect everthing is!! if the gravitaional pull of the world was just a tad smaller for instance we would all be crushed. just look at how beautiful the world actually is too! - green grass - blue sky) anyway, he wanted to communicate with us and did so through bringing these manifestations of god to earth to give us all guidance.

Yes, I think you could argue that a quest for immortality is part of wanting to be in the "right" religious affiliation.
