I have been sober in AA for 20 years.
Before I entered AA I tried a number of things, not just for my drinking, but for my broken life. I came from a very fundamentalist Xtian church: all of the prayers, 'healings' and the attempts to 'drive out demons' did nothing.
I would say that yes, prayer works. It certainly worked for me.
But I would also say that you can't pray, "God, heal me of my addiction" and then expect it to magically go away.
The great thing about The 12 Steps (the program used in AA) is that it helps you unroot the problem, and it gives you very concrete ways to deal with it.
I found it extremely helpful, also, to be in close association with so many people who all had such widely varying beliefs. I believe there IS a God. But I know there are many, many paths to God.

god wants you to struggle because it makes you a stronger person.
Life is a series of tests that god places in front of us and if we pass, we get eternal life.
If we fail, he does give us a second chance.
But if we don't try at all, he has no pity for us.
Life is about choice, the choices you make.
god didn't make addiction, that was made by a much lower power to trip you up so you don't succeed.
god does answer prayer, but not the way you want him to. Help others, think of others and focus on them and your problems will be easier to deal with.
Find something constructive to do with yourself, get a hobby or do a sport or something but fill your life with good things that are good for you and you won't be idle to even think about your addictions.
If things are going bad, your addictions come to the front too. So find something, anything that will make you feel better. Get out of the house and do things.
Addictions are hard to get rid of and most people are addicted to something be it, smoking, drugs, alcohol, sex or whatever. Sometimes you might get rid of one addiction and pick up another, just try to make that next addiction a healthier one.
good luck

God does answer prayer. He does not always take the problems away. It seems to me that He expects us to work through them with His help.
As for addictions, He removed mine overnight. I was alcoholic for almost 33 years. I was at the point of drinking hard whiskey for breakfast, had torn up a couple of cars, lost a wife to divorce. My life was a complete mess. AA didn't do it for me, I found their attitude to be annoying at the very least.
When I tried to quit, I found that I couldn't...I tried it several times over the years and kept going back to it.
Finally, in 1996, I asked God to help me (I was drunk as a coot at the time) and proceeded to pass out.
The next morning, I did not feel the need for that breakfast drink. Didn't want anything the rest of the day, which was unusual.
Here it is 11 years later and I'm still off of the stuff, just for the asking.
BTW, He took cigarettes too. It's GREAT!.
The key here is to ask using Jesus' name AND to believe that you will receive your request.

Yes... God is the source of healing and help. Some people may be able to instantly walk away from addictions while others struggle for a long time to be free of the same addiction. Don't give up.
Luke 18:1 Jesus told his disciples a story. He wanted to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said, “In a certain town there was a judge. He didn’t have any respect for God or care about people. 3 A widow lived in that town. She came to the judge again and again. She kept begging him, ‘Make things right for me. Someone is doing me wrong.’
4 “For some time the judge refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t have any respect for God. I don’t care about people. 5 But this widow keeps bothering me. So I will see that things are made right for her. If I don’t, she will wear me out by coming again and again!’”
6 The Lord said, “Listen to what the unfair judge says. 7 “God’s chosen people cry out to him day and night. Won’t he make things right for them? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, God will see that things are made right for them. He will make sure it happens quickly. “But when the Son of Man comes, will he find people on earth who have faith?”

While God CAN do this, He normally does not. What He does is help you deal with your problem. He can help you by giving you hope, by providing the fellowship of other believers (normally through a church) to help you, by calling professionals (therapists, doctors, etc.) to help you, and perhaps most of all by showing you that He cares enough to not only give you another chance, but to help you with your new start to a new life.
Seldom have I seen God simply take away a problem or the consequences of a problem. But I have seen many times how God has helped people get through troubling times.
Good luck.

The urge associated with your addiction will NEVER go away. You will always be an addict. You are the only person who can decide that you will stop. Free will, you know. Until you are positive that you want to stop, and not just "try", you will not succeed. Once you've decided to stop, ask friends and family for support. Tough, rigid support. And look into help groups for your addiction. But don't do that until YOU make up your mind to stop, or you will just be wasting their time.

God does answer prayers. And he helps us to cope with problems that we may be having.
But he does not just take them away. We have to work through out problems with his help. But if we don't rely on his help, we're on our own and that would be difficult.
He doesn't expect us to struggle. He expects us to go to him and through our burdens on him, and he will provide the needed strength to deal with the issues we have.
God is a loving God, and will never let you deal with things that you cannot handle. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Jesus cast out many demonds while he walked on this planet. Like casting the demonds into the pigs. Or getting rid of Mary's (Magdalin's) 7 demonds.
Demonds has slowly been recognized as illnesses like eplipcy, mental illnesses, and addictions. In fact, in most cases an addiction is a sin. Ted Bundy was addicted to rapping and killing --- That Enron Dude was addicted to steeling.
In short, Yes, Jesus cures Demonds, and takes away your sins, but first you have to have faith and believe that he (Trinity) loves you and that "His will (God's Will) be done".

He wants you to let go of your addiction, no matter how strong. Call upon him to take it away and let him. It's hard, I know, but you will be free from the addiction and you will have a better relationship with God because of it.

Praying has NEVER produced results, it only temporarily made me feel better,hmmm....sounds like a drug? You have to take action for yourself instead of hoping some invisible force is going to save you, you'll only allow yourself to get worse off. Go to NA/AA or Gambler's Anonymous depending what you're addicted to. If you want a new addiction, take on religion!
