Well most puppies are born with some worms so most people just deworm them. The worms most people see are the tapeworms (the rice looking ones). the other worms are usually microscopic and have to be diagnosed on a fecal exam. Most over the counter dewormers only treat rounds and hooks, but your dog could also have whipworms, tapeworms, coccidia, or giardia. The most common sign of worms is runny stool or vomiting. I would recommend just taking your dog into the vet and have a fecal done. I mean if your dog doesnt have worms why would you want to spend money deworming it just in case and if they find worms they can give better dewormers that target any and all worms they find. Hope this helps
Oh and the common myth about dragging the bottom is not necessarily true. They usually do that when their anal glansd are full and need to be emptied.

Isn't it funny how this word, WORMS, can bring loathing & fear into the minds of all dog owners? The local vet receives an immediate phone call & an SOS for medications to kill these "worms." When the vet says you need to bring your pooch in, or worse yet, obtain an "sample" for the vet to examine, many grow weak with the idea of transporting a "worm", to the vet. This does not matter if the worm is in feces or in the dog. There are many different types of worms that dog can have, & the only way a vet knows which type has infested your canine is to see it, test it & prescribe the correct medication to kill it. Some worms are visible to the human eye. Some worms are too microscopic to be seen without the aid of a microscope. All have various symptoms, & all can be treated/killed & once dead, makes for a happier & healthier pet, & makes for a happier you. Check out the page below for the different types...Good Luck! :)

By taking a stool sample to the vet and getting a fecal test done. This is the only 100% way to know if your dog has worms and what kind(s).

One way to tell is if it is dragging its butt. Also bloating, skin iritations and in the case of a tape worm little castings that look like rice in its scat and possibling clinging to its tail or rectal area. Oh ya by the way these little rice things move, quite gross really

Normally, they have wriggling 'worm like' things in their poop + they may wipe their botton along the floor.
