actually it all depends upon if you have a well sealed freezer, how often or if your freezer self defrosts. and how often you stand there with the fridge and or freezer open trying to decide what to snack on.

Each time the door stays open it allows outside moister and that's what can and does ruin ice cream along with freezer burn and the melt-downs when the freezer go's into a defrost mode. Look at the ice cream and if its growing like a fuzz on it then perhaps its time to toss it. You can taste freezer burn. It doesn't mean the ice cream has gone bad it just mean one of those other issues I mentioned came into play.

I freeze lots of TV dinners. Also if you buy frozen foods the food is water logged before frozen to keep the ice Cristal's from accepting the outer freezer burn.

One of my buddies when he eats his ice cream he smooths the ice cream to a flat surface in the container and puts a small amount of water over the top of it to form a frozen barrier to ward off those issues i mentioned. Kind of like a secondary cap on the product.

Just ignore the expiration date even if the ice cream does go bad, it'll just go bad way before what the date says. All ice creams are different and they won't expire the same day, some will last longer depending on how you freeze the ice cream. The fresher the ice cream the longer the ice cream will last you.

They are refiring to an unopened container. This is the date that they say it is good for sales purposes.
