Eventually I want to redo the kitchen in my house, but I want to keep the cost under $10k, maybe even $5k. The kitchen is not very large either.

We want new cabinets, counter top, and new appliances:
range, over the range microwave (there currently is not one, and the exhaust fan is not directly above the range),
install a dishwasher as well as a garbage disposal (there is no dishwasher or disposal now).

What are some ways to keep the costs $5 - $10K? We could install the appliances ourselves, but I would prefer someone be paid to install the cabinets, counter and moving the exhast fan over so that we can have an OTR microwave.

The best way is to do the labor yourself. That is where most of the cost will come from.

You might consider asking your friends if they have a trade in this or know someone who is good but reasonable.

Maybe you could refinish your cabinets, replace the doors and countertops and even the sink & fixtures if you wanted. New handles or knobs make a HUGE difference. As for the floors, Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a book. They're by the register and do it yourself. It's not as hard as you might think and very rewarding. Electrical and plumbing: must be certified in that area.....Good luck.

one way to keep costs down is to do cabinet refacing. They take the doors off and use the same base cabinets and just put new doors. I have heard also to go to cabinet makers instead of Lowes - or home depot -

look into painting the cabints yourself, only if they are in good shape. that will save you alot of $$$. also most over the stove microwavs have a built in exhaust fan like mine . GE is a good brand and so is Maytag.

Think about whether you really need to replace the whole cabinets, or whether you could get new doors and worktops and retain the existing cabinets.
