We have been together for 2 1/2 years. I'm in love with the person that he pretended to be so i would fall in love with him. That person is gone and he isn't coming back! I don't even want him to, cause i know it would be fake. I don't want to hurt him. What do I do?

ur not hurtin him, he hurt u, if u have to ask urself if u love him, it means u dont, u loved a fairy tale unfortunately, try to move on, i just got off a 3 year relationship also:(

if it is exactly ow you make it sound, then move on....
that said, i suspect it is deceptively oversimplified. no one is exactly who they are when you first meet. people grow and change, on top of the normal social ways we put our best foot forward. that it has taken 2&1/2 years to realize a major lie is a little odd. if it took that long, you are eigther very naive, or this is an excuse to bail.
as long as you are not married, or have kids to be impacted, do what feels right. otherwise, take an honest look at the relationship, and see if there is another answer other than, "you don't act exactly like you did on our first date."

Sounds like you just need to be straight with him and let him know that you are really sorry, but you feel like you need to move on. Invite him for drinks at a restaurant, have him meet you there, order a couple of drinks at the bar and do it then, being in public it can't get too ugly. And then you can just leave.

Make a list of all the things you love about him and than make a list of all the things you don't like about him and see which list is longer if the list of bad things is longer than you should leave him. Good luck.
