I suggest looking at homes outside of the city. Check out Rockland county and Westchester county in NY; Bergen county in NJ. All three counties are VERY close to the city; as a matter of fact, many people who work in the city actually live in one of these 3 counties. I work in manhattan and live in rockland county; from my driveway to my job's parking garage takes me about 40 minutes (and that's WITH traffic). Good luck!

Don't be in a rush to buy a place.
If you eventually plan on buying a house, rent for a while!

Get to know the area, the schools, the taxes (people who work in NYC have the option of living in 3 different states.)
