i have a 7 year old yellow/pit bull cross. she does the same thing, the vet told me that its normal for older dogs(5years and up) to do that, especially labs being that the breed is known for having respitory problems anyway, a build-up of phlem, from being outside, or in smokey environment is normal, kinda like humans. you know when you go out in the cold then come in, your nose is runny, etc.
same for dogs. but its harder for them to get rid of the excess, anyway, hope this helped. if still worried, get some 500mg or less vitamin C and put it in her water.

Allergies can develop and cause phlem. Also believe it or not, impacted anal glands can cause it to, if the dog is doing a lot of licking trying to help express them.
I would check out if any of her habits have changed, if she is eating and drinking okay, is her poop a different odor or color etc. Have you changed her food recently? She may be allergic to an ingredient in that or a new treat. Also environmental allergies can cause plem... my dog is allergic to the red dye on Milk Bone treats.
Maybe take her to the vet for a check up, and mention the new phlem issue.

She might have pnemonia. Is there fever? Is she lethargic? Have you taken her to the vet? I think you should. If it is a rather bright yellow color, stringy like substance she gags, it might just simply be an upset stomach. My dog does this off and on,but for sure every month. The vet said that dogs are like people, some get more stomach upsets than others, some get ulcers, some don't. So,determine if what is coming out is phlem, mucous stuff,or the yellow variety. Phlem, call the vet,yellow......wait it out and watch her. Her appetite should remain the same,no lethargy, stuff like that. Good luck.

I had this problem with my choc. lab he was 13yrs. it more than likely is a partially paralyzed larynx....does she also do this when she is excited? how is she when the weather is warm? a paralyzed larynx can be helped with anti-inflammatory pills, steroids or if you have the cash an operation will fix the problem. once it has progressed the gagging happens all day and night long and sometimes like in my dogs case the pills and steroids don't work.....have your vet check her out. I found out labs are prone to this problem

Could be a number of things....But my dog also does this when it gets Tape worms. I would start with giving him a dewormer from either your vet or your pet store that carries the worm pills for tapeworms.

he could have something stuck in his throat. my dog was doing this not too long ago and I finally took him to the vet and he stuck a tube down his throat and my dog threw up a piece of the ball he was playing with earlier in the day. you should take him to the vet.
