You might try Mankind's Search for God published by the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society, Inc. It is about 379 pages, pocket size, and briefly deals with such religions as Shinto, Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, common threads of mythology, searching through magic and spiritism.

The best source would be to go directly to the various religions and denominations themselves. Sometime, and even though well meaning-ed, authors do not give a true description of what a certain religion believes in. Search the Internet, located a source, and find out info on that source directly from the source. Good luck.

Houston Smith's _The World's Religions_ is a classic text on the subject.

I'd highly suggest it.

Also, the Eliade text that was mentioned earlier would be good.
