I loved it and wish I had stayed in, I could have retired by now! It is what you make of it. If you are unhappy, strike for a different rate. If you are in the black shoe Navy, try being a bubblehead. The Navy is a very diverse service, it offers more than any other branch. And it has the coolest stuff.....submarines, planes, etc.....
Stay in, make it a carreer, it could be a very rewarding life! Have fun, learn a lot and good luck!

I was in the Navy from 1985 to 1990. It wasn't what I wanted for a career, but it was a damn good experience. If I had a choice to do it over again or not, I would be "haze gray and underway" in a heart beat.
You will do things and see places that most people never even think about doing or going. You'll have many, many memories of your experience. Some that I have are:
- 2 West-Pac's, and all the ports we visited. Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and others. And the women in these ports! Some stories that I just can't tell here about that!
- a week in the Bering Sea in January, 1987. Wind cills down to -70 degrees F, and rough seas. I now live in MN, and laugh when people complain about how cold it gets here!
- 3 days dead in the water in the South Pacific. Both boilers went down, and one of the 2 emergency diesels. All "non-essential" power was shut down, no showers, no A/C, and cold-cuts and beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- And, of course, all the GREAT people that I served with.

I'm retired Navy Aviation Electronics Tech E7. I spent 15 years strictly Air Nav (Patrol planes). Liked it a lot. Then I went on ship for three years. I didn't care for shipboard life. Ended my time with 22 years. All in all not too bad.

First of all Thanks, for defending what we as Americans believe in. Whether it be slamming the President or Praising him. That's what we are about.
My neighbor was a CPO on the enterprise and other ships for his 25 years and he flies the Navy flag below the US flag. He still loves what he did for his country.

If you just joined, pick out your goal early and move towards it whenever you get the chance.
