He then said, his wife made him buy them, and we should send her a thank you note. How would you handle this?

The classy thing to do would be if both of you shared with chocolates with everyone and then bought a thank you cards and let everybody sign it.

Judging from the fact that both female employees were given chocolates, and your boss pointed out that you should send a thank you note to his wife - I'd take the entire situation at face value.

Obviously, if there was any other intention behind this Valentine's gift, he would not have encouraged you to thank his wife. It would be ludicrous to have you thank his wife for a gift she didn't know about or one that was purchased with other intentions.

Additionally, he didn't single any ONE person out - only the female staff. Men could definitely have felt it was awkward to get a Valentine's Day gift from another man.

It could definitely have been handled more diplomatically. Last year, the owners of our company (a married couple), purchased a single, large box of chocolates for the entire staff of our business. But additionally, there were smaller, personal presents directly from the male owner for all the ladies in the office (presented by his wife, who made a point of letting us know that they were from him). It didn't make me feel uncomfortable in any way, he was much older than most of the female office staff and I looked up to him as a grandfatherly figure.

I'd simply write a very nice note to his wife, in case this is a test of the etiquette of his office staff. Otherwise, I think it's just a very kind gesture, one that has been lost in many workplaces, which is probably the reason so many people may read more into it than is really there.

Your boss is as clueless as all men when it comes to what women expect for Valentine's Day, and so he is obviously taking cues from his wife, who for her part is obviously one of those women who live for Valentine's Day and assumes everyone else does as well. A quick note will settle her down a bit, and I'm sure your boss thinks the entire situation is far more awkward than you think it is, and would appreciate it if the whole thing just went away. Poor guy....

Send the thank you note and forget about it. You are reading too much into this. Not everyone was raised in a barn you know, some people are thoughtful and nice, so be the same and dont make something out of it that its not.

Just to be on the safe side, I would send his wife a thank yo note.
Don't get involved with him, this could be a test to see which of you would and would not do it.

Send his wife a thank you note and give him sex. It's a fair trade.
