It is methane gas. (Also known as "sewer gas". It is why you need to vent commodes and sewer pipes when building restrooms. The pipe usually vents through the roof, allowing this gas to vent harmlessly into the air. Otherwise,........not only does it smell. But if you were to drop a cigarette butt or match into the john, ......you might get a bit of a surprise ! )

you mean the substance or the name for the act they're doing? it's called flatulence or if you want, you can call it a fart. Haha.. no, but the actual name of the gas is galled flatus. It consists of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, aerobic microbes and a bunch of other gases.

The amount of methane in flatulence is VERY SMALL. It is mostly, big surprise, nitrogen gas. Methane gas and some other sulfur compunds cause the bad smell, but they are trace gasses in the fart mixture.
