Why do most members of the public take so little notice of scientific findings unless they are presented in the newspapers ?

Unless something has a practical day to day use, most people could care less. Now if it's the latest new electronic device that everyone is going to want, that's a different story. Unless it affects you, generally you don't care. It is only interesting to the person who works in that field, or to someone that seeks that stuff out in trade magazines (1% of population?). Sorry, but true.

I don't know how else the general public can get this information - unless we atively seek out specific information, then the only way we'll see or hear of it is from the media.

Because is not entertaining enough. People much rather the latest developments of Anna Nichole Smith's death...or Brangelina...or Britney's snatch latest picture.

because everytime some major breakthrough occurrs in medicine, the average joe might not be able to reap the benefits for several years while the FDA fools around.

because science is always contradicting itself. Look at the pharmaceutical industry.

4: it doesnt pertain 2 everyday life
