Creationists believe that 'Goddidit'. What's up for grabs is whether He did it by direct, instantaneous creation, or by using the laws of physics to build an evolutionary mechanism to play with. I see evolution as a machine that still needs His input codes.

Creationists are usually christians or jews accepting Genesis 1 as literal truth. (albeit maybe a very simple version)
They believe that everything that is was created, more or less as it now is, by an intelligent designer. The Biblical version of this act calls the designer - God.
The age of the earth is irrelevant to creation thought. 6000 years or 4.5 billion doesn't matter. The main key is that things were created.
So yes, one can be a creationist and be an atheist. It takes some mind work to get there, but it is logical since there are many non-religious evidences for creation.
A creationist, by accepting that everything was created as it is, by default denies evolution on a species to species scale. That is, one species does not mutate into another. But, there is micro-evolution - speciation and adaptation, where animals will express, within pre-exisiting limits of their genetics - traits that allow them to survive in a changing/changed environment.
A creationist by definition cannot be an evolutionist. A christian can be a creationist or an evolutionist.
Finally - creation is a theory, it cannot be proven. Evolution is also a theory - it cannot be proven. That is why the debate goes on - if either side had proof, the "losing side" would just die out...
Summary : Creationists see evidence in an intelligent designer who made everything as it is.

a creationist, in very general terms, believes that God created everything.
It's almost always applied to the Christian belief that God created everything in 7 days, as stated in the book of Genesis.
Young Earth Creationists believe that this 7 day creation happened no more than 10,000 years ago.
Not all creationists are Young Earth Creationists.

A creationist believes God created the universe and everything in it exactly as described in Genesis 1 and 2.
Their close relatives, the Intelligent Design people, admit the parts of evolution that can be demonstrated, but ascribe anything that hasn't been definitively explained and demonstrated (not fully understood) to the work of God.

As a creationist, I believe that God created the universe and all kinds of life, including humans, in six days as described in the Bible. I believe that the first two people, Adam and Eve, sinned and this sin has been passed down to everyone in our sin nature as a result of our spiritual connection to and responsibility for one another.
