The flu can take a couple of days to incubate inside your body. So if you are around this person a lot (spouse, family member), chances are you've already been exposed to it.

First of all, give your patient lots of fluids and of course chicken noodle soup. I know its gross, but researchers have linked it with recovering from colds and flu's. To help keep yourself healthy, eat yogurt and lots of green leafy veggies. Yogurt has been proven to reduce your susceptability to the common cold and flu by 25%, and green leafy veggies are packed with antioxidents that will help you fight off the flu.

If someone coughs or sneezes around you and you inhale the air that contains the contaminents you can get it. Also if you touch anything that got coughed on or touched and then put the fingers in your mouth or nose or eye you can get it. So if you or them wear a mask and never put your fingers in your mouth or eyes you should be ok...of course always wash your hands.

You may have already had that flu and therefore anti-bodies so you don't get sick from it again.
Or maybe you were very diligent about washing your hands.
