here they have to take a pee test and they (depending on the type of accident and the conditions((weather)) they may be put on leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.

As an officer, when involved in a MVA with a police vehicle on duty the requirement is to contact the state police to do the investigation.
When off-duty there is no direct representation of the agency you are employed by therefore the local police may investigate the accident.

The next higher level agency and would conduct an investigation. If the investigation reveals there was error on the part of the officer, the IA division would follow up in an internal audit of training, procedures and the work history of the officer . The officer would be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the investigation report.

When I was a officer, if he was off duty, it is done like any accident investigation.
but since in oiur department if there is a fatality a supervisor has to be called anyway, it would be done same, since the requirement for any officer acident is call a supervisor who does the investigation or approves of the report done.
Our department would have required a full drug and alcohol screen.

It is the same as for a civilian involved in a crash involving a fatality. They will be required to submit to a blood or urine test for drug or alcohol impairment. Some police agencies have vehicles equiped with digital video recorders that can be reviewed. These recorders record constanly.

I'm assuming you mean on duty with a police cruiser.
Here in Canada, the accident scene would be locked down like a crime scene and the province's SUI (special investigation's unit) would be called in to investigate the accident.

Sweep it under the rug? No seriously there will be an investigation and from the evidence taken from the scene and all parties invloved, they will determine who is at fault and then go from there. If there were witnesses then they will also be asked for their input of what the saw and what they remember about the incident.
