If the dark is your backpack, it is an enclosed space and so probably isn't the dark at all, but the enclosed space. What happens is the banana is releasing ethylene gas as it ripens, a plant hormone, and the ethylene is getting trapped in the backpack and causing the banana to ripen even faster. As the banana ripens more, it releases more ethylene, ripens more because of the ethylene, and so on. This would happen with many other fruits, but it is just more obvious with a banana.

I don't think it's that they're in the dark, I think it's that they're in a closed place. If you have bananas in a wide open room with the lights off, they won't ripen faster. But if you put them in a paper bag, they will.

I say its cus of heat. A banana being inside your backpack would get more heat than out in da open air.
