F8 will bring up the startup menu. You might be talking about Last Known Good Configuration which is in the startup menu.

your right ,but this method only works with some makes of computers
other manufacturers provide system recovery disks which you place in your dvd-rom and this basically restores your operating system to "factory defualt"
in other words the state it was in when you first took it out of the box
the easiest way to find out your system configuration is try pressing f10 at boot up and see if a system recovery screen appears, this may take a few attempts
if your p.c is still under warranty you can ring the support helpline and they normally can supply you with a replacement recovery disk if you have lost or mis-placed yours
good luck

If you have the original windows disc!
Start your pc then insert the disc!
close the install program!
Then press start > Run> then type: SFC /scannow then press enter!
Note there is a space between SFC and /
This should replace all lost files and may cure your problem!

Well, if you have a newer Dell (such as a Dimension), and you mean reset it to the factory defaults, I believe you press Ctrl+F11.

It may well have helped if you'd bothered to tell us what laptop computer you have, seeing as there are different function keys for different things on different laptops.
