I have been thinking about this for a while now and would love more than anything to adopt a child within the next year or two. I am new at all of this so anyone who has adopted before what is all required to go about doing this. How does the whole thing work?

I WOULD LIKE SOME KIND WORDS FROM PEOPLE WHO HAVE ADOPTED BEFORE OR KNEW SOMEONE WHO ADOPTED. THANKS

I am a Waiting Parent in a domestic adoption program through an agency outside of Washington DC. Allow me to tell you about my experience thus far so you can gather more information on this great journey you are about to start.

My husband and I first contacted our agency in September of 2005. After we decided that adoption was our option for being parents we were "all in".. Our homestudy was approved in April of 2006, and we have been waiting since then. We have been considered by several birth mothers along with about 6-8 other couples, and have not been chosen to date>(Our agency allows the birth mothers to choose the adoptive couples)

Your homestudy will be the first thing you want to focus on, as it will take about 3 months for all of the paperwork to be done. Here is a "portion" of our Homestudy Checklist (items we needed to do)

FBI fingerprinting
Criminal backround check
Full physicals
TB test/HIV test
Fire department home inspection
HHS home inspection
5 page Autobiography of you/your spouse
4 letters of recommendation from non-family members (1) of them does a one on one interview with social worker
3 social worker consultations, last one is in your home
Several agency hosted seminars/meetings
Write a Dear Birth mother letter and make a scrap book of your life.

Again, this is only a portion of the checklist we had to do. The scrap book was a lot of fun to put together, and the overwhelming elation when our homestudy was approved was one of the best experiences of my life...........to know that a child would be coming to us...................the hard part????? PATIENCE.......giving up control.............the unknown............and the emotional rollercoaster ride......................HOWEVER..........just to know that after years of infertility, and no chance of a biological child, my husband and I will be parents one day, and we cannot wait.

I recommend that you attend any local seminars that agencies host, read books, research on line, do your homework. Keep a journal too! It helps! Good Luck!

I am a birth mom mentor but I also counsel adoptive parents. The first thing you must have is called a home study. You can contact an adoption agency or your local DHS office to accomplish this.
I gave up a child for adoption 19 months ago, the result of a rape. I chose a single Mom for many reasons. I have never regretted it.
HOWEVER-money and marital status will play a large factor in your eligibility. If you would like more info, please email me. I will give you a phone number and a website to learn more.
I do not recommend going through an "attorney only" adoption for SO many reasons. You will need an attorney, but if you want a quality procedure, use an agency-they will provide an attorney also.

Get in touch with local adoption agencies. It is wonderful you want to adopt children. Please be aware that many agencies have strict criteria you must meet. If you already have one child (I read your profile and know you have a son) they may put you on a waiting list. - people with no children are given preferential treatment. Also, it would look better if you were married so you may want to wait until after your wedding.
